Tunurama

Tunarama is one of the most popular festivals in Australia. It is organized in Port Lincoln, SA during the Australia Day Long Weekend. This long weekend includes Monday closest to the 26th January. Tunarama lasts for four days. More than 40,000 people enjoy this festival. The first Tunarama festival was held in 1960.

The most popular event of the festival is the Championship Tuna Toss. Both men and women can participate. Each competitor has to throw a fish weighing between eight and ten kilograms as far as he or she can. A plastic model is used in the preliminaries. But in the finals competitors throw real frozen fish. The best competitors get money prices. The world record of 37.23 metres was achieved by Sean Carlin in 1998. Sean Carlin is a former Olympic Hammer Thrower.
