Gurning or chucking is a term which involves making distorted facial expressions. The most popular technique is putting your lower jaw forward and covering upper lip with your lower one. Experts claim that toothless persons can be especially good in gurning.
There are gurning competitions all over England. The most popular one is held in small town of Egremont, Cumbria. Local World Gurning Championship is held annually as part of the crab fair. It is believed that the first gurning competition was organized there in 1266. Legends of gurning are Tommy Mattinson, Gordon Mattinson and Ron Looney.
Since 1966 there are female competitors too. The first junior competition was held in 1979. On some gurning competitions people put they heads through a horse collar ("braffin"). Competitions very similar to gurning are held in Australia too. Australian term for gurning is the "duck face."
