Lord of Miracles or Señor de los Milagros is one of the biggest religious festivals in South America. It is held between the 18th and 28th of October in the Peruvian capital of Lima. It is believed that a slave, who arrived to Peru from Angola, drew the image of black Jesus Christ on the hut walls in the plantation Pachacamilla located not far from Lima. Despite several attempts the image could not be removed.
Nowadays this image is very popular among the Catholics of Lima. It is placed in the almost two tons heavy litter. The most important part of the festival is a huge procession involving tens of thousands of worshippers. They are traditionally dressed in the purple clothes. The procession lasts for 24 hours. It starts in the church of Las Nazarenas and finishes in the church of La Merced located in Barrios Altos (Uptown) neighbourhood of Lima.
The Lord of Miracles festival also has its culinary side. Lot of traditional food is on offer by numerous street vendors. Very popular dish is the one called the Turrón de Doña Pepa. It is actually an anise-flavoured cake soaked in a special brown sugar syrup.
