Inuit throat singing is a traditional musical form. It can also be seen as kind of game. It is known under different names – katajjaq, piqqusiraarniq, nipaquhiit etc. It is performed by two women. They stand face to face holding each other's arms.
One woman starts a short rhythmic form and repeats it with short breaks. Another woman fills those breaks with another rhythmic form. Both voiced and unvoiced sounds in these forms are done through inhalation or exhalation. The woman who first gets out of breath looses the competition. Everything ends with lot of laughter. Inuit throat singing performances last between 2 and 3 minutes. Nowadays there are competitions where the winner is a woman who wins the highest number of duels.
