Balalaika is a traditional Russian musical instrument. This string instrument has a triangular body and tree strings. There are are balalaikas with six strings too.
Balalaikas differ according to what kind of sound they produce. Differing from the highest-pitched to the lowest sound there are the prima balalaika, sekunda balalaika, alto balalaika, bass balalaika and contrabass balalaika. These balalaikas are also of different size. The most common one is the prima balalaika. Piccolo balalaika also exist but it is quite rare. The balalaika was first mentioned in a Russian document of 1688.
