Angklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument. It is originally from the western part of Java. It is made of bamboo pipes. Each angklung has an individual sound. The sound is created by shaking the object. Songs are performed by an ensemble where each person plays one or several instruments.
Smaller instruments produce higher notes and those bigger ones will create lower notes. The oldest angklung is known as the Angklung Gubrag. It was made in the 17th century in Jasinga, Bogor. Nowadays anglung is used for performances of different types of music. Traditionally it is used at temple anniversaries (odalan) and during various death related rituals. People of Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand also use the angklung.
