Volcanic ash or ordinary clay is sometimes used too. Person uses only one finger to make a drawing. These kind of mysterious drawings are actually descriptions of local rituals, mythology, everyday events, songs etc. It is said that each drawing can be read.
To keep the tradition alive local communities plan to organize sand drawing festivals in Ambrym, Ambae, Malakula, Paama and Vanua Lava. Children learn about sand drawings in schools. Vanuatu sand drawings are protected by the UNESCO.
