Rose is a perennial plant of the genus Rosa. It belongs to the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species of roses. They are known for their fragrance and beauty. Rose perfumes are made from attar of roses or rose oil. During process some rose water is also created. Rose water is used in cooking, cosmetics and even some religious rituals.
Roses also have symbolic meanings in different cultures and civilisations. For most of us they symbolize love and beauty. Rose was associated with the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis (Aset) and the Ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite. Roses is often shown on depictions of the Virgin Mary.
Red roses are especially famous. They are often given as present on the Valentine's Day. They are often symbols of social ist or social democratic political parties. Red rose is one of national symbols of Bulgaria. Rose is the national symbol of England too.
According to some folk beliefs rose leaves thrown into fire are going to bring good luck. Roses are very important part of La Diada de Sant Jordi or Saint George's Day in Barcelona.
