Ondel-ondel are traditional puppets of the Betawi people which live in the Indonesian capital Jakarta and surrounding area. These puppets are usually about 2.5 metres tall. They are made of bamboo. Due to special way the puppet is constructed an individual can easily control it. Each puppet has a wooden mask. There are both male and female ondel-ondel puppets. Male ones wear red masks and those female ones wear white masks.
Ondel-ondel puppet is dressed in colourful clothes. Puppet's hair is made of dry palm branches. Term ondel-ondel is also used to define a form of folkloric performance. Ondel-ondel puppets actually represent the ancestors. The locals believe that these puppets can protect from evil spirits.
