Chinese Scented Sachets or fragrant bags (in Chinese xiang nang) are small cloth bags filled with aromatic herbs. Chinese people have been using them for centuries. They are used for many reasons like for example to absorb human sweat, fight insects or even ward off evil spirits etc.
During Qing or Manchu Dynasty (1644-1912) a Chinese girl used to make one sachet by herself and then send it to the boy she loved. Scented Sachets are made in different shapes and sizes. Many have different patterns on them. Patterns can have special meaning. Here is just one example. Double-fish or double-butterfly patterns are symbols of love.
