Channapatna (Chennapatna) toys are special kind of wooden toys made in the town Channapatna located in the Indian Karnataka state. Experts think that local toys have their origin in the art of Persian toymakers that was brought to this part of India by the Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.
Channapatna toys are traditionally made of Wrightia tinctoria tree or as locals call it “Aale mara” (ivory wood). Nowadays other kind of trees like Para rubber tree, pine, sycamore, teak and cedar are also used. Channapatna toys are coloured with safe natural dyes.
