This salty Scandinavian delicacy combines characteristics of cake and sandwich. The Swedes call it Smörgåstårta or in English "sandwich cake". In Finland it is known as Voileipäkakku. It is hard to say more about the origin of this dish. There are people saying that it was the Danish writer Ludwig Holberg (1684-1754) who first mentioned it.
To make the Smörgåstårta you are going to need several layers of white or rye bread. The basic ingredients appearing as the filling are eggs and mayonnaise. Everything else depends on your personal taste. People use really various things – ham, cheese, smoked salmon, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, shrimps etc.
The top and outer sides of the "sandwich cake" are usually decorated with some mayonnaise, paste and, for example, pieces of vegetables. When the Smörgåstårta is finished it is put into the refrigerator as it is the best when served cold.
