Barmbrack (barm brack) or in Irish báirín breac ("speckled loaf") is a traditional sweet bread from Ireland. Its main ingredients are flour, raisins, sugar, baking powder, egg and some Irish tea.
Many people associate it with the celebration of Halloween. Barmbrack prepared for the occasion includes several objects placed inside the bread during its making. Each object has its symbolic meaning. It is believed that it foretells the future of the person who finds it.
Objects differ from region to region, from family to family. A gold ring found means a wedding within a year. A coin foretells a wealth. A small piece of cloth means the person is going to get poor. A thimble found is a bad sign for the single woman. It is believed that she will not get married. A button foretells the same thing for the single man.
