Kaltenberg Knights' Tournament

Quite many people love everything about the Middle Ages. They organize special events involving knights, court ladies and other things related to that period of history. Probably the most spectacular event is the one held in the Kaltenberg Castle. This 13th century castle is located next to the village of Geletendorf, about 50 kilometres west of Munich, Germany.

The event is known as the Kaltenberg Knights' Tournament (“Kaltenberger Ritterturnier “). It is held during three weekends in July. It was started back in 1979 by the Prince Lutipold of Bavaria. Each year it attracts the audience of more than 120,000 people.

The tournament is held on 7 stages. It has various amazing street shows. There is the big parade (“festumzug”) involving all participants. Visitors can enjoy in the medieval market. Traditional handicrafts and food can bought there.

There is also an event called the Gauklernacht or Jesters' night. It is the show involving medieval entertainers – musicians, acrobats, dancers etc. Concerts of medieval music are set several times during the Kaltenberg Knights' Tournament.

The most spectacular part of the tournament is the show where the Black knight and his gang kidnap the princess. Fierce fights between knights are held. The organizers claim that this is the World’s largest Jousting Tournament

There is something for the kids too. Those between 6 and 12 can participate in the Bayern-3 Children’s tournament. Every kid gets a personal certificate.
