Gaijatra (Gai Jatra) or Cow Festival is organized by the Newa (Newar) people in Nepal. It is held in the Kathmandu valley during the Nepalese month of Bhadra (August-September). This week-long festival is actually a commemoration for the people who died in the past year.
The festival has its origin in ancient worshipping of the god of death Yamaraj. You may think that the festival is a sad event. But, it is just the opposite. It is an event full of laughter and dancing. Very interesting part of the festival is a parade held on its second day. The parade includes people dressed up as a cow.
