Burning The Clocks

Burning the Clocks is the winter solstice festival in the most popular English sea resort of Brighton, East Sussex. It is organized on the 21st of December by an artist-led charity Same Sky. Many local community organisations, schools and everyone else interested also participate in the event. The first Burning the Clocks festival was in 1993.

Various costumes and lanterns of all sizes are made of white paper and willow canes. There is a clock face on all costumes. It symbolizes the passing time. Big lanterns are shaped as lions, dragons, unicorns etc. The general theme of the festival changes a bit each year.

Some 2,000 people are involved in the parade. There are 4 local bands playing. There is an audience of over 20,000 people. The parade moves through the city centre to the beach where the main part of the event is held. The gigantic figure of the king on a throne and all the lanterns are burned there. Everyone enjoys in wonderful fireworks.
